Low-rent bounty hunter Stephanie Plum reaches depths of personal experience that other women detectives never quite do. In Hot Six, for example, a sequence of new and hideous cars bite the dust; she finds herself lumbered with a policeman's multiply incontinent dog; and she has several bad skin days. All this when she is trying to prove her distinctly more competent colleague and occasional boyfriend Ranger innocent of a mob hit; avoid the heavies trailing her in the hope of finding him; and cope with a wife-abusing bail defaulter with nasty habits, such as setting Stephanie on fire.

BOOK REVIEW :

Oh myyy… Ranger is on the run in this installment.

Nah, he might be keeping away from the law and is a current FTA, but he don’t run for nobody. Rewind to One For The Money when Morelli was on the run and he kept finding Stephanie when she was supposed to be hauling his ass in to collect. In this case, she lets Joyce have the FTA for Ranger because nobody will find Ranger unless he wants to be found. Keeps Joyce busy...kind of.

Now I’m gonna say, I am getting a bit confuzzed with the whole Morelli and Ranger sexual tension thing with Stephanie. If she is with Morelli, even though he doesn’t want to marry her, then what is all the kissy face with Ranger?

Problem solved. I’ll take Ranger.

Habib and Mitchell are the new Stephanie-stalkers. I kinda liked them when they were being fun stalkers, before they showed their claws.

“Raghead,” Mitchell said.

Habib narrowed his eyes. “Filthy American dog.”

“Blubber-belly.”

“Son of a camel-wallah.”

“Go fuck yourself,” Mitchell said.

“And may your testicles fall off,” Habib responded.

Moon/Mooner is the new Stephanie accessory in this installment, as ya gotta always have one of those.

Things aren’t looking good…again…in the keeping-a-car-long-enough-before-it-gets-car-bombed-or-blown up-or-burned-out.

“Hey, man,” Moon said to me. “Real shame about your car. That’s mad crazy, dude.”

I wonder what happened?

Lawdy she goes through a lot of cars. There must be a fictional book records for blowing up cars, Janet/Stephanie would win it.

Ranger gets a haircut. This I happily note as I can’t see him with that slicked back ponytail. Glad it’s now gone.

He’d abandoned his usual outfit of black rap clothes or GI Joe cammies. He was wearing a brown leather jacket, a cream-colored Henley, faded jeans, and work boots. His hair, which had always been slicked back in a ponytail, was cut short. He had a two-day beard, making his teeth seem whiter and his Latino complexion seem darker. A wolf in Gap clothing.

“Jeez,” I said, feeling a flutter of something I’d rather not admit to in the pit of my stomach. “You look different.”

“Just your average guy.”

Yeah, right.

I had to laugh at the Rollswagen.

Only in a Stephanie Plum book.

Don’t get me started on the poop squishing incident.

Another awesome poolside read where Grandma Mazur is involved, sidekicks abound, things explode, stoners hang about and Ranger and Morelli have sexy banter for Stephanie. Rex is hanging out in his soup can and stuffing food into his cheeks, aaannd Stephanie always comes across somebody she went to school with.

Oh and there is Bob. I like Bob.

Looking forward to some more Steph Plum books, because I find I need to read one at least every two weeks to get my fix of the silly and sexy.

BOOK REVIEW - LADIES MAN by KATY EVANS - MANWHORE # 3 - CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE

tháng 1 27, 2017     4 STARS, Book Reviews 2017, Contemporary Romance, Katy Evans, Ladies Man, Library Loan, Manwhore Series     No comments

By: Katy Evans
Published By: Katy Evans
Released: Available Now
Details: Paperback from library, 286 Pages

RATING: 4 PRETTY COVER STARS!

Blurb: Goodreads

He’s not the guy you date.
He’s the one night stand.

You’d think the man who sends hot looks my way, who called me succulent, would want to strip me to my skin and spread me out on his bed like every other woman in Chicago.

Except he passed on my offer….

Just like I once did on his.

He’s wary, like I am.

He’s broken, like I am.

And everyone knows two broken parts can’t ever make a whole.

So I try to distract myself. I’m back to dating.

Tahoe and I are strictly friends. He doesn’t think my new beau is good enough, but to him, no man is good enough for me. Especially Tahoe himself.

But the more time Tahoe and I spend around each other, the more confused I feel.

I'm trying to open myself to love.

But I'm quickly realizing that the only man I want is stubborn, cocky, unattainable playboy Tahoe Roth.

The one your mother warned you about.
The one my body craves.
The only one who will surely break my heart.

BOOK REVIEW:

I love me some Katy Evans reads. I love the cover of Ladies Man. Tahoe is so preeetty.

I was a bit of a cover whore when it came to choosing this book to read. I admit that.

I am gonna be honest and say, the first 2/3rds of this book was slow. Everything was a slow burn.

Sexual tension and inner monologuing of thoughts for another man, when you have a boyfriend kinda made me feel bad for Trent. Trent shouldn’t have even been in the story because Gina’s mind really wasn’t interested in him. He was a placeholder.

The last third was sigh-worthy.

I had trouble with both lead characters in the first chunk and dammit I didn’t want to have trouble with Tahoe.

No I didn’t!

I understand this series is called Manwhore for a reason. The lads are manwhores before they are tamed or glued back together…but…gahhhhh!

Tahoe, man, you were a little too much for me at times and I should not say that out loud as this is a KATY EVANS book.

“Look, I’ve probably got a shit-ton of girls still back at my place. I really don’t feel like playing the player tonight.”

Dude! Really? Now I know you are a pretty Viking specimen, but…really. Shit-ton?

Gina's character I needed more about why she would be the one for Tahoe and vice versa. Gina didn’t have a lot of depth to her character, for me.

I loved the lacrosse side to the story, no matter how small it was. It’s a sport here in Australia we don’t hear enough about. I know it’s big in US as my hubs half sister’s kids, all three of them got scholarships in US, due to lacrosse and they are Aussies.

I am so glad I read until the end because I got me TAHOE how I wanted him to be. I understand there has to be angst in this type of read and build-up, but I was having trouble liking him and I wanted to like him.

It's still a solid four star read for me... that's not a bad thing.

I still can’t help thinking that they might need to now move to another far away state so Gina doesn’t keep bumping into all his previous lays because that would start to wear thin after a while.

Yup as the tag says on the front of the cover, ‘The man you mother warned you about.’

*looks back at cover*

Well, that would explain it. It's Franggy Yanez with blue eyes.

So pretty.

I chose Slade's extract because a lot of readers know him from the Men Of Ocean Beach series.

He simply had to make it as a crossover character with Phoenix.

BOOK REVIEW - HIGH FIVE by JANET EVANOVICH - STEPHANIE PLUM # 5 - CONTEMPORARY CRIME - PAN MACMILLAN

tháng 1 24, 2017     4.5 STARS, Book Reviews 2017, Contemporary Crime, High Five, Janet Evanovich, Library Loan, Pan Macmillan, Stephanie Plum Series     No comments

By: Janet Evanovich
Published By: Pan Macmillan
Released: Available Now
Details: Paperback from library, 336 Pages

RATING: 4.5 TEAM RANGER STARS!

Blurb: Goodreads

What’s Stephanie up to now?

Her Uncle Fred has disappeared. A body turns up in a garbage bag. She’s got a nasty bookie following her around town. Grandma Mazur has her hands on the stun gun. Stephanie can’t keep a car for more than forty-eight hours. Two men are trying to get her into bed. She has nothing to wear to the Mafia wedding. And there’s an angry little man (don’t call him a dwarf!) who won’t leave her apartment.

Bail jumping in Trenton is down to small potatoes. Stephanie’s only open case is a small bond for a small violation, committed by a small person who raises Stephanie’s frustration level in big ways. So short of money and long on bills, Stephanie comes up with a plan-–diversify! Signing on as an intern with entrepreneurial Super Bounty Hunter Ranger, Stephanie ventures into Ranger’s mostly morally correct and marginally legal operations.

None of this makes vice cop Joe Morelli a happy man. The cop in him can’t help but wonder as to the source of Stephanie’s expensive new cars. And the rest of him, the man who’s been friend and lover to Stephanie, can’t help but wonder if there’s more to the partnership than meets the eye.

The internship is downgraded to second priority when Uncle Fred goes missing. Even though Grandma Mazur is sure he was abducted by aliens, Stephanie sets out to look for Fred. He’s a perfectly average senior citizen, and he’s disappeared without a trace while running errands. He’s left his ten-year-old Pontiac station wagon locked up nice and neat in the Grand Union parking lot, the cleaning is carefully arranged on the back seat, and his wife is at home, waiting for him to return with the bread and the milk and the olive loaf bologna. Locked in the top drawer of his desk are photos of a body, dismembered and stuffed into a garbage bag. And locked away in the computer files of a another average citizen are the clues that will lead Stephanie to Fred.

BOOK REVIEW:

I adore the Stephanie Plum series. Sure there is a similar recipe every book I have read to date, but eh…wonderful poolside reading.

We have cars blowing up…check!

He looked down at the flattened, charred piece of scrap metal pressed into the macadam.

“That’s the Porsche,” I said. “It exploded and caught fire and then the garbage truck fell over on it.”

I especially like the part about the garbage truck.”

“I was afraid you might be mad.”

“Cars are easy to come by, Babe. People are harder to replace. Are you okay?”

“Yeah. I was lucky. I was just waiting to see what you wanted to do with the Porsche.”

“Not much anybody’s going to do with that dead soldier,” Ranger said. “Think we’ll walk away from this one.”

“It was a great car.”

Ranger took one last look at it. “You might be more the Humvee type,” he said, steering me toward the Mercedes.

Grandma Mazur and Lula being hilarious…check!

Steph doing things her own way, which is never the right way…check!

Ranger…Oh my lawdy. He can keep doing what he is doing. I get such a lady boner for him. Funnily enough, Joe has to work harder to give me a lady boner. It’s Ranger all the way for me. * sigh *

Each book Janet adds a quirky character and Randy Briggs is such a fun addition. I want to see more of him. Briggs and Lula’s banter…

“Eeeeeeeee,” Briggs shrieked. “Eeeeeeeee.”

“Stop that!” Lula yelled. “You sound like a girl. You’re creeping me out.”

Did I mention missing appendages and dead bodies? Check!

Let’s face it I just want to quote some Ranger moments.

My kitchen is small, and Ranger seemed to be taking up a lot of space, standing very close. He reached around me and snagged two salad bowls from the over-the-counter cabinet. “It’s not length of life that’s important,” he said. “It’s the quality. The goal is to have purity of mind and body.”

“Do you have a pure mind and body?”

Ranger locked eyes with me. “Not right now.”

And then we learn something about the ever mysterious Ranger.

Who was this man? He owned office buildings in Boston. And he was the … I was having a hard time merging this new knowledge into my mental Ranger-the-gunrunner/bounty-hunter file.

Stephanie is a bit low on FTAs so she gains employment through Ranger. This was always gonna be a good thing for me.

I was feeling much too attracted to him. Ranger wasn’t listed under potential boyfriends in my Rolodex. Ranger was listed under crazed mercenaries. An attraction to Ranger would be like chasing after the doomsday orgasm.

His eyes dropped to the towel and then back to my face. “Returning your hat, Babe.” He put the SEALs hat on my head and adjusted it over my damp hair. “You left it in the lobby.”

“Oh, thanks.”

Ranger smiled.

“What?” I asked.

“Cute,” Ranger said.

Joe Morelli needs to catch my eye more. I feel I am letting Team Morelli down as I am Team Ranger.

Morelli looked down at my utility belt.

“What kind of a statement is this?”

“Fear.”

He gave his head a disbelieving shake. “You know what my biggest fear is? I worry that someday you might be the mother of my children.”

See they are inevitable, so I need to get on Team Morelli, but when Janet writes Ranger the way she does…then I am all about the Team Ranger. Also I have that visual of Ranger from the One For The Money movie…and I likey.

Okay so lots of shenanigans happen, banter flows, sexual tension is imminent and villains are hankering to get Steph. All in all, I had an entertaining time with many giggles.

“The balls in your court,” Ranger said. “Let me know when you’re ready.”

“For the car?”

He smiled.

SEE!

Janet it’s your fault I’m Team Ranger when you write all this stuff with Ranger being so darn rawrrrrr.

Whisper

I was stolen as an infant and raised by my master, William Dupre. For twenty years I was hidden inside a plantation home on the outskirts of Connard, Louisiana. Stupidity killed William giving me my chance for freedom. But where do I go when I have only known the walls of his home? When I have no friends and have never made contact with another person, other than my master and mistress.

I am a secret.

The outside world was only known to me through the movies I was granted access to.
I’ve only ever had contact with one man who treated me as his pet to do as he wished.

I chose to run without looking back. I stole into the night on a wing and a prayer with my book, a handful of bills and my ragdoll Jenny and a head full of hope. I had to believe all of humanity was not like William and I was right.

But then I had to go and let my guard down one evening giving myself over like some sex starved fool, to the tattooed man who had strolled into the bar I was working at.

I was a coo yon, a stupid girl.

Miss Catherine

I had felt it in my bones that somethin’ was goin’ to be comin’. I didn’t know when, but dem bones of mine never lied to me. They always gave me a warnin’, a feelin’ in dem that left me to work the rest out for myself. I hadn’t had such a strong feelin’ seepin’ into dem in a long time.

There was nothin’ much to be done but sit here in front of my comforting fire in my cozy livin’ room with my crochet until I be called upon.

Sara

We talk. I lie a lot because I need to keep my identity a secret. I can’t let that personal information out. I lie about my name, because I gave my real name to a stranger today, and now I’m saddled with a damning letter.

Tonight I will be Sara, and she will help me move forward. I’m handing her the reins.

Edge

I've had too much fucking time to think about my past on the ride to Louisiana. I had blocked out that part of my life, even though it helped to shape the person I am now.

I'm ruthless.

I don't give second chances.

I get the job done.

Conscience plays no part in my world.

You f*ck me or the club over, you are done for.

I'm indeed a soulless bastard through and through.

I'm grateful I was taken from my father, or God only knows what would have become of me.

Would I even be alive?

They say blood is thicker than water.

Well, that is debatable.

Boxer

She has no reason to trust me, especially since I'm a man. I have to keep reminding myself I'm the only other man she has met in her entire life and I'm asking her to believe my words when she has no good reason to.

Jonathan Boothe

I really should get out of Dodge, but this is gonna be too good to miss.

The maestro has conducted his last song.

What could possibly go wrong?

Contains adult situations which may offend and graphic violence, but it is one hell of a fictional ride. Strap yourself in. For mature aged readers 18 +.

EXCERPT

EDGE POV

I’ve just walked into the bar and I’m in need of a piss, so I follow the restroom sign and notice along the way how empty the bar is, while the jukebox has some romantic country song wailing out of it. I could have relieved myself on my father’s land, but even my piss was too good to be spilled on something he had owned.

I’ve taken care of business, ready for a beer, when I hear barely audible feminine grunts followed by smacking noises coming from up the stairs.

Call me curious.

I quietly climb the stairs, noting the Private: Staff Only sign nailed to the beam above my head, ignoring it as I walk toward the sounds, when I see her in a back room, punching a heavy bag in painted on, ass-hugging, little black workout shorts. I’m amused at first. My thoughts of revenge falling to second place as I cross my arms over my chest, propping myself up against the doorjamb while I watch her smack the bag with her toned arms as she makes those soft little grunts.

She has no idea I’m standing here observing her. I should walk away, but the more I stand here watching her, the more I can’t take my eyes off her. She sure is a looker.

This female is so determined to break her thumbs that I have to step in and save them. She is lean, but she still has nice curves, like a slow-winding country road travelling up her body. Her tight, rounded globes have my dick’s attention as she swings around the bag, concentrating so hard that she doesn’t notice me, sweat dripping off her pretty face, determination written all over it.

I decide then and there I want to get to know her tonight. I have seen that look. That’s the look of somebody who’s working off stress…or working off somebody.

She is quick on her feet, but she is holding her hands wrong. She doesn’t even have them strapped. She looks like she walked in and just needed to start hitting something. Her tits are a good handful, and her tight black workout top holds them secure. Her long brown hair is pulled back into a ponytail, perfect for grabbing onto, and she has these big, chocolate brown eyes a man could drown in while he fucks her senseless.

She is light on her feet as she rotates around again, jabbing at the bag with her back to me. In my current status of good-guy-civilian, I have to help her out.

I walk up to her and lay my hands on either side of her shoulders to calm her movements. She stops with a gasp, her body stiffening. I watch her reaction time. It’s slow as her mind works on what to do next. She needs to get a little quicker with that.

Then it comes.

I’m ready.

She swings around, ready to shove her palm straight up into my nose, hoping to buy herself some time as she flees for help.

Somebody has been taking self-defense lessons. I actually find myself liking the fact that she has some knowledge about how to protect herself.

I dodge her predictable defensive response to my invasion of her space. Her palm goes flying through the air, hitting nothing. I twist her back around, keeping her arms locked down tight, and her back to my chest. “We can do this all night if you like, but I’m not here to hurt you. I came in for a beer and to take a piss. I’ve been on the road the last few days. If you’ll calm down, I’ll release you.”

She thinks about my words and my actions and does as she’s told. She’s naïve, but I won’t tell her that. Before I fully release her, I move my hands over hers and reposition her thumbs for her. “Like this.” I soften my deep, rough, gravelly voice because I can be very intimidating when I want to be. “Little lady, I was just gonna tell you you’re gonna break those thumbs the way you are hitting that bag.” From her body language, I can see intimidation will get me nowhere. I need to behave like a civil gentleman, and not who I really am.

“You’re not thinking about the care of your hands before you beat the heavy bag senseless because your mind is elsewhere.” She’s all kinds of frazzled about something, and this is an impulsive thing to do. She might have started out with good intentions, putting her workout gear on, but then it escalated to, ‘Fuck my hands. I need to hit something, pronto’.

I fully release her and she immediately takes a step away from me, twisting around to take in who was touching her, who has invaded her private workout. Her eyes widen in surprise as she looks me up and down quickly. They don’t linger too long. She just needed to assess me for any danger.

Smart girl.

All she sees standing before her is a clean-cut American guy. She would have given me a different look had she seen me in my cut, but for some reason, I don’t think it would have necessarily impressed her. There are the chicks who would fear us, and then there are the chicks who can’t wait to get in our pants. I’m not a hundred percent sure which category she was in at the moment.

I look her in the eyes. “I can tell this isn’t your first time at the bag. You’ve let yourself get distracted, little lady.”

“Thank you,” she whispers to me. “You are right. I am distracted. I wasn’t thinking clearly.” Her eyes are now downcast and darting back and forth. “I’m good now, thank you. You can leave me to it.”

I sense a challenge. I saw her look of appreciation before she looked away. I never have to work hard. I get fucked with ease.

“You shouldn’t be up here. This is the private part of the bar and it’s now closed. How did you get in here?” Her voice is soft-spoken.

“The door was unlocked and the jukebox was wailing. Also, it’s only just eight o’clock. I needed a beer. What bar shuts at eight o’clock?”

“This bar,” she mumbles. She slowly looks up when I don’t respond to her two words, and then her eyes roam all over my body...again.

I’m neatly dressed and my hair is freshly cut. I’m wearing designer jeans, a checkered button up, and a leather jacket. I stopped off in New Orleans to get myself some civvies to wear on the way over. My cut is rolled up in my saddle bag on my bike.

I usually look dangerous and intimidating, but tonight, I need to be somebody else less threatening. I also need to be anonymous in this town, just a guy wanting a beer, passing on through.

Tonight, I’m nothing more than your average Joe Blow.

“Are you in charge of the bar?” I can’t sense anybody else around.

“Not normally, but for now, yes.”

She’s deciding if she will allow me a drink. I know I look tired, and now I’m all kinds of sexually frustrated, since I’ve laid eyes on this female.

“If you want a beer, I can get you one.” She’s too trusting, but I won’t knock her back. I really could do with a beer.

This new hair cut is hanging in my face, and it works to my advantage, making me look younger. I scoop it up and over my head and give her a little smile. “You look like you need a break. Can I buy you a drink?” I’m all for smooth talking her to get what I want.

I can see her weighing up whether to let me buy her a drink. Interesting, she’s making me work for it. I’m all for a challenge. She just made herself that little bit more of a game to me, so I offer up more information. “I’m just in town to visit family and decided to stop on by for a couple drinks before I head on over.” A little white lie, but I can see I have to pull some half-truths here to get this one to take the bait.

“And they can’t give you a beer?”

Shit. “They no longer drink.” Well, that part is true. “Wouldn’t be polite of me to show up with alcohol, when they’re on the wagon.”

I give her my warmest look, which I normally reserve for the people I’m hunting, because I need to pull on my resources for this female standing before me.

My brothers know if I get this look on my face I’m far more dangerous than when I look like I want to kill you. If I look like I want to kill you, then where’s the element of surprise? But if I look at you like you are my friend and you can trust me, then you won’t see me coming, motherfucker.

I need to take the edge off and get laid, and she just became my prey for the night. I’ll be fucking her before the night is through.

I hold my hand out to her to shake. “I’m Edge, and you are?”

She puts her small hand in mine and gives my hand a little squeeze. “I’m Sara.” I can see immediately she’s lying to me. She has no clue how to lie. My name’s Edge because I always have the upper hand.

She looks at me like she wants to say something more, her mouth opens a little, and then she says in a very small voice, “Ok. I’ll be over in a few minutes. Let me just clean up a bit.”

“I’ll just go wait out at the bar for you.” I have to strain my ears to hear her. “Take your time, little lady. I’ll be waiting.”

I can sniff a good girl out, and she’s definitely a good girl, but can I get her to be a bad girl tonight?

I head down to the bar and take it upon myself to flip the closed sign on and click the locks. She’s not used to closing up the bar because somebody else normally does this, and tonight, for whatever reason, she’s been left alone to do it, and look what happens.

I happen.

I take a slow look around the bar. It’s fitted out in wood and leather. A real old school kind of small town bar, with an old school kind of jukebox in the corner. The music has stopped, so I walk over to it, feeling around my pockets for a handful of coins, and I punch in several songs. The jukebox comes to life, clicking and whirring, and “One Of These Nights” by The Eagles starts playing.

I could have ducked behind the bar and gotten a couple of beers, but I don’t want to appear more than who I want her to see. I want in her pants, and being Edge, the Soulless Bastard, isn’t gonna cut it with this gal.

I take out my phone and text Hazard. I let him know I’ve arrived and I’ll be tidying everything up soon. Whisper will be meeting an untimely end. We discuss some club stuff back and forth, and then end our conversation. I delete the messages, so my phone is clean.

I’ve positioned myself so I can see when she comes back into the bar. The jukebox clicks away as it chooses the next song, “Are You Gonna Be My Girl” by Jet starts playing.

She walks in, looking around the empty bar until she locates where I’m seated. She makes a stop behind the bar and holds up two beers. I nod my head, and she brings them over. I don’t care about the brand; I just need a drink. I can see she’s showered and has put on a clean white tank top, a knitted black zip-up, little denim shorts, and flip-flops. I’m amused at the flip-flops.

“Slide on in, little lady.” I figure she’ll sit next to me, but instead, she sits across from me. “Do you talk?”

“Of course.” Her voice is so damn quiet against the jukebox playing in the background.

“Darlin’, you’re gonna have to speak up because I can’t hear you.” She slides the beer over to me and I hold it up to her. “Thank you,” I tell her, then take a deep swig.

She takes a long drink from her bottle and makes a little face while she looks about nervously. I need to go in for another swoop of getting her to trust me. This chick needs to chill. “Look, Sara, if you don’t want to talk and have a beer, that’s fine by me. I just thought you looked interesting and we might get along tonight.”

“No. You are great. It’s me. I’ve got a lot of things on my mind.” Her eyes turn to me, but can’t stay on me for too long. “I received some unwanted news today.”

“Is that what the pounding on the heavy bag was all about?”

She nods her head. “My trainer would be disappointed all his hard work went down the peach pit the minute he left me alone.”

Peach pit? I like this woman. “Is he your boyfriend?” Of course she would have somebody. I take a long swig out of my bottle, draining the contents. I’m about to cock-block my own dick and get out of here.

“Oh, no!” She laughs and I like the sound of it. “He’s more a father figure to me. He’s away for a few days, and I was just feeling a little tense. He will help me sort it all out when he gets back.”

I give my dick a mental double-thumbs-up, deciding maybe she’s worth the challenge tonight after all. It’s very rare a female doesn’t push herself on me, or rub her tits in my face when I invite her for a drink. Actually, it’s rare more than one woman isn’t vying for my attention at the same time. This is something new to me. She’s put a small chink in my ego.

When I’m hunting, I need to know when to back off and when to go in for the kill. This girl needs more effort, or else I will blow it before I can get to the finish line.

BOOK REVIEW - FEVERBORN by KAREN MARIE MONING - FEVER SERIES # 8 - URBAN FANTASY - DELACORTE PRESS

tháng 1 13, 2017     4.75 STARS, Book Reviews 2017, Delacorte Press, Fever Series, Feverborn, Karen Marie Moning, Library Loan, Urban Fantasy     No comments

By: Karen Marie Moning
Published By: Delacorte Press
Released: Available Now
Details: Hardcover from library ( will order my copy soon ) , 490 Pages

RATING: 4.75 BARRONS & RYODAN & LOR STARS!

Blurb: Goodreads

In Karen Marie Moning’s latest installment of the epic #1 New York Times bestselling Fever series, the stakes have never been higher and the chemistry has never been hotter. Hurtling us into a realm of labyrinthine intrigue and consummate seduction, FEVERBORN is a riveting tale of ancient evil, lust, betrayal, forgiveness and the redemptive power of love.

When the immortal race of the Fae destroyed the ancient wall dividing the worlds of Man and Faery, the very fabric of the universe was damaged and now Earth is vanishing bit by bit. Only the long-lost Song of Making—a haunting, dangerous melody that is the source of all life itself—can save the planet.

But those who seek the mythic Song—Mac, Barrons, Ryodan and Jada—must contend with old wounds and new enemies, passions that burn hot and hunger for vengeance that runs deep. The challenges are many: The Keltar at war with nine immortals who’ve secretly ruled Dublin for eons, Mac and Jada hunted by the masses, the Seelie queen nowhere to be found, and the most powerful Unseelie prince in all creation determined to rule both Fae and Man. Now the task of solving the ancient riddle of the Song of Making falls to a band of deadly warriors divided among—and within—themselves.

Once a normal city possessing a touch of ancient magic, Dublin is now a treacherously magical city with only a touch of normal. And in those war-torn streets, Mac will come face to face with her most savage enemy yet: herself.

BOOK REVIEW:

I am very addicted to this series, have been for many a year. When I started reading, the latest book released was Faefever, so I have had to sit patiently waiting for every book since.

Now, in saying that, I am gonna admit Burned is the only book I haven’t done a review on, because…well I got a little shock at the time and a little confused when it didn’t follow in the vein of Iced as part of Dani’s trilogy.

I liked Burned but it was my least favorite. I have finally been able to say that out loud. I stay away from any reviews, blurbs or teasers when I read in this series, so I had no clue Burned was going to get flipped on me and reverting back to Mac and Barrons.

These things happen.

I am so pleased I got more Dani/Jada and Ryodan and the ever lovable, Lor in Feverborn.

Lor.

The man was a beast. A primitive caveman who loved being what he was. Blunt, blatantly sexual, with a voracious appetite for rock and roll, brawls, and hot blondes, he was prone to proposition a woman by saying, “Hey, wanna fuck?” and scored a ridiculous amount of time with his Viking good looks and that hint of something dirty-kinky-raw just beneath the surface, locked, loaded, and ready to blast a woman’s inhibitions to dust.

Giddy up!

It was not enough, but I respect KMM has gone for whatever reason in this direction of Mac and Barrons again.

Her writing is always superb, Burned may not have been the continued story direction ( Dani O'Malley Trilogy ) I had hoped, as I so adore Dani and Ryodan ( in their own trilogy ), but eh, not my story to tell.

Feverborn I was very hesitant to pick up, hence why I'm only doing it now... because of Burned.

I am pleased to say, I personally enjoyed what KMM did with all the characters in this installment, even if not a lot of new stuff happened compared to the fast pace of the original series. I hung on tight to any Jada and Ryodan and soaked it up.

I did get a shock emotion where I got a bit girlie and had a little cry.

Nice one KMM.J

I got the mother of all endings.

Nice one KMM
.
J

I say this because Feversong is like a few days away if I understand correctly.

Nice one me.  #win

Barrons and Mac had a kinda off relationship going on in Feverborn, compared to how they behaved in other books. It was a little distant, I felt. There was in the moment sex a couple times, but Mac was clearly off doing her stuff for the reader to see.

He went motionless, swept my body with that dark, inscrutable gaze, and the shape of his mouth changed. "Ah, Ms. Lane, did you pull me out of there to fuck?”

I think I got a bit confuzzed with him calling her Ms. Lane again. Barrons did eventually give us an explanation.

Jada’s character I do adore, I miss Dani, and I think Mac does too, but Jada is here now. I do miss all those Batman quotes and banter between Ryodan and Dani.

Let's face it...I am kinda upset the trilogy got snuffed out. My readers heart got sad.

Moving on.

This quote just made me put my hand over my heart…bless.

Silver eyes met hers and locked. “I didn’t like Dani.”

“At least you’re consistent,” she said coolly.

His silver eyes were ice. “I loved her.”

Well, day…um!

Oh... Christian. He’s such a great character. As the reader we have watched him evolve enormously over the series.

Christian glided down the hallway toward her, part muscled Highlander, part sleek, dark Faerie, majestic black-velvet wings trailing the gold floor, and despite having been trained to stand their ground, a few of her sidhe-seers peeled back.

Dancer really gets Dani and accepts Jada. I love how he makes things not complicated, where everybody else can’t see underneath like Dancer can.

“Laughter is power. One of the greatest weapons we have. It can slay dragons and it can heal. Jada doesn’t have it anymore. As long as she doesn’t, she’s more vulnerable than any of you seem to realize. Stop worrying about your idiotic ‘things’ and start worrying about her. Make her laugh, Mac. And remember how to do it yourself, while you’re at it…”

I adore how Lor always calls Dani/Jada, honey. I just melt. They have such a great friendship, he adores her, but knows she’s off limits.

“Aw, honey, keep dancing like that, you’re gonna get me killed,” Lor said close to her ear.

Mac and Barrons are that couple that simply stay with you once you have read them.

And this is one of the reasons why.

“Because, Ms. Lane, when the world goes to bloody hell,

I will always be at your bloody side.”

The latter part of this book really got hopping and I am so excited to carry on shortly with Feversong... because that ending.

O.M.G!

“Uh, Barrons, we’re in a world of shit,” I muttered.

“Same page, Ms. Lane. Same bloody word.”

RATING: 4.5 LOGAN STARS!

Blurb: Goodreads

They took too much.
Left too little.
I had nothing to lose...until him.

*****************

~Lana~

I didn't expect him.
I didn't want to fall in love.
But I can't let him go.

Logan Bennett makes the world a safer place.
He's brilliant.
He's a hero.
He locks away the sick and depraved.
But while he's saving lives, I'm taking them. Collecting the debts that are owed to me.

Ten years ago, they took from me. They left me for dead.
They should have made sure I stayed dead.

Now I'm taking from them.
One name at a time.

I've trained for too long.
I've been patient.
I can't stop now.

Revenge is best served cold...

They never see me coming, until I paint their walls red.

Logan doesn't know how they hurt me. He doesn't know about the screams they ignored. He doesn't know how twisted that town really is.

He just knows people are dying.
He doesn't know he's in love with their killer.

No one suspects a dead girl.
And Logan doesn't suspect the girl in his bed.

They're looking for a monster.
Not a girl who loves red.
Not a girl in love.

I'm a faceless nightmare.

At least until I tell them the story they've pretended never happened.

But in the end, will Logan choose them? Or will we watch them burn together?

BOOK REVIEW :

Nodding, I let him shut my door, and I crank my car. I have two kills to plan, a boyfriend to see and a best friend to un-piss off.

And not in that order.

I’m just the typical American woman.

I was feeling like a shorter read as I have been reading four hundred and fifty page upwards books.

I saw this one was for #free. It still is at time of this posting. (Click on the #free)

I don’t care how long a book is, because some thick books are filled with so much filler that I can have trouble getting through them.

This one is only 107 pages. I love a short book that feels long.

Have I read before where the basis for the plot is, the female lead goes on a revenge killing spree of many male characters who took part in her death, or what they thought was her death and she comes back with many surgeries and looking different?

Yes.

But, damn if this wasn’t a good read.

Sure there were parts that I felt were quite set up from an author point. What I mean was the likely hood of coincidence in some things was questionable, but that didn’t deter from it being a book that flowed very well.

The violence is quite clever, because although the author is telling you, more than showing it actually happening in detail, your mind will imagine, and that is where you get the gahhh. She will lead you in with some, but you will take it on in your head.

I am not sure how I feel about not actually being told what fully happened to the female lead in this installment, for her revenge to be so absolute and precise with what she does to each of her kills. We get hints, we get scars, but I wonder if I will find out actually what happened? We get teased with pieces. I think I would have preferred to see or understand in my mind what happened to her in this first book.

I really enjoyed Logan's character and thought him very intelligent and I also felt Lana was intelligent too. But this doesn't stop the heart making you do stupid things that can cause your downfall.

The profiling part of this book was interesting and made me think about watching other people and seeing if I could profile them. How accurate would I be?

I thought this was a very good 100 odd page book. I am keen to read on.

I have read a lot darker, but that is up to the reader and what they think is dark for them.

I really like all the characters.

A tangled web is forming.

A train wreck is inevitable.

I highly recommend.

BOOK REVIEW - MISUNDERSTOOD by KATHRYN KELLY - DEATH DWELLERS MC # 2 - ADULT BIKER ROMANCE

tháng 1 02, 2017     4.25 STARS, Adult, Biker Romance, Book Reviews 2017, Death Dwellers MC Series, Kathryn Kelly, Misunderstood     No comments

By: Kathryn Kelly
Published By: Kathryn Kelly
Released: Available Now
Details : Kindle, 312 Pages

RATING: 4.25 JOHNNIE STARS!

Blurb: Goodreads

Johnnie 'John-boy' Donovan is the new VP of the Death Dwellers MC. While the club president, his cousin Christopher 'Outlaw' Caldwell, is on his honeymoon, Johnnie is left in charge. With Outlaw's return just a week away, he just wants things to run smoothly and without a hitch. But trouble is brewing for the Death Dwellers and an evil from his past may be back to haunt him.

Kendall Miller is an attorney and the ex-girlfriend to Spoon, the club President of The Torpedoes MC. She's in over way over her head and when her little sister is taken, Kendall needs to do whatever it takes to get the information on the Death Dwellers before it’s too late.

Can Johnnie trust the mysterious red haired woman who showed up naked to his cousin’s bachelor party? Can Kendall rely on the handsome blond biker that made a lasting impression on her mind, body, and heart to help her get her sister back?

Lives will be lost and hearts will be broken in the third book of The Death Dwellers MC series.

BOOK REVIEW :

I am really enjoying this MC series because Kathryn doesn’t pull any punches. She does write hardcore MC stories with men who aren’t playing at being in a club to make it easier on readers emotions.

These guys are gritty.

Johnnie I adored in the first two books, but Kathryn shows us a deeper side to him in Misunderstood.

He’s now VP and stepped up to the plate while Outlaw is away on his honeymoon and he just wants everything to be cool for the time his Prez is away.

It starts off well…but then…

Johnnie will show us he has secrets and a loyalty that will come into question. He has his heart issues he must sort out. Meggie he craves, but she is not his to crave. Kendall landed in his bed, but she is hiding her own secrets. Kendall has her own demons she must survive as well as saving her sister. Kendall f*cks up a fair bit, but she doesn’t mean to.

Kendall and Johnnie hit rocky patches. Can they overcome all the betrayal, violence and shit that goes down?

“Somewhere I read that you’re only destined a certain number of words for certain people who come into your life. Maybe ten to someone you just run across and will never see again. Ten thousand here. One thousand there. Words, Kendall, mean a lot. They can hurt like the sharp edge of a knife. They can make you cry or laugh. They can also empower you. But, maybe, we’re out of words…”

Can Johnnie keep a hold of the reigns and sort out the mess that has come forth while Outlaw is away?

He’s Johnnie... of course he can. Doesn't mean it's gonna be easy.

I really liked Mortician in this installment. He shows us a softer side when it comes to handling Kendall. Bravo Mortician, but in saying that, he’s got the handle, Mortician for a reason.

The one thing I have noticed with the female leads, you either like them or have strong opinions of them in this series. I speak only on behalf of the first 3 books I’ve read, thus far.

What I will say is it is a very addictive series and I enjoy the raw, gritty storytelling.

These boys talk the talk and walk the walk in this genre.
