Life: An Exploded Diagram
Mal Peet
385 pages

At this point I need to take you on a short detour. I'm very much a cause-and-effect sort of a fellow. I'm fascinated by the way things fit together (and come to pieces). And if we were to take what eventually happened to Frankie and me and drew something like a flowchart of how it came about, one of its arrows would lead us into the darkness of a Caribbean night.

Clem Ackroyd, the son of a war veteran and a careful bookkeeper, is a working-class boy hoping to one day scrape together the funds to go to art school. Frankie Mortimer is the daughter of a wealthy land owner, living in an inherited estate. Soon, in Norfolk, England, the two will embark on a relationship that must be kept a secret, and if found out, their world could be blown apart. Little do they know, that John F. Kennedy and Nikita Khruschev are about to do just that, as the event later known in history books as the Cuban Missile Crisis begins to unfold.

Life: An Exploded Diagram is set in three main time periods. The novel opens in the year 1945, in Norfolk, England, focusing on the joy and hardship that followed World War II. The story then jumps to 1962, the plot jumping across the pond to illuminate John F. Kennedy and his crisis in Cuba, and then back to Clem, Frankie, and life on the farm. In the last chapter of the book, the reader will have found themselves in New York City at the beginning of a time with enough turbulence to give the 60s a run for their money. All three of these settings will explore the effects of war, and more importantly explosions, on the generations.

In May of 2012, at the Sydney Writer’s Festival, Mal Peet spoke in an interview of where his idea for this novel came from. He said: “I was thinking about nuclear weapons…and I was wondering where they’d all gone. We don’t talk about them anymore…The fact that there is enough stuff out there to blow us to Kingdom Come seems to have slipped our minds.”

Peet uses an interesting metaphor to describe the Cuban Missile Crisis in a nutshell: [The Americans] and the Russians were like two guys in a cellar, up to their waists in petrol, arguing about who's got the bigger box of matches.

Throughout the novel, several chapters are dedicated solely to describing the crisis to readers with little to no knowledge about the event. But, let it be known that this brief insight is not written in any way like a textbook. It is fact, but still written in a literary voice.  He describes President Kennedy in all of his good and his bad, explores American democracy as if he were a spy - he goes deeper than what was ever in the public eye. Although Peet is an author from England, he seems to play the role of a British countryman looking in from the outside, as well as a member of Kennedy's cabinet, all at the same time.

The novel is divided into three parts:
1)      Putting Things Together
2)      Blowing Things Apart
3)      Picking Up the Pieces.

Each part is then divided appropriately into short vignette-like chapters with titles such as: A Latin-American Interlude, The Girl Who Ate His Heart Bums a Smoke, Jack and Nikita Talk Turkey, and The Day the World Ended.

The chapters centered around Clem and Frankie are narrated by none other than Clem himself, in all of his British dialect, awkwardness and wrong assumptions. His voice is distinctive and unique, as he and Frankie discover all the wrongs, and more importantly rights, involved with falling in love for the first time.

On page 376, Clem, and ultimately, Peet, makes a profound statement on history.
I lived through all these times, these great events, without caring very much, concerned with my own aging rather than the world's. Most of us do likewise. History is the heavy traffic that prevents us from crossing the road. We're not especially interested in what it consists of. We wait, more or less patently, for it to pause, so that we can get to the liquor store or the laundromat or the burger bar.

If I were reading this book for an English class (or I guess one could read this for a history class I suppose) and I were asked to “find a passage from the text that speaks to the true message of the story” the above would be my pick.

Life: An Exploded Diagram is a brilliantly written novel, exposing the individual's, and the world's wounds to young readers in a way that is humorous, extremely romantic, and poignant. But also with a sense of finality that leaves the traveler, not the reader, feeling enlightened, yet tired, as if ending an explosive journey.

Where do the weeks go?

 tháng 7 26, 2013     No comments

Another week and I almost didn't post!  Gotta get better at that.

We kinda had a family car emergency this week that resulted in me buying a new "Swagger Wagon"  AKA a Toyota Sienna.  I love my new car, and now I can relax and work on reading!

This weekend I am finishing my ARC of Blackmoore by Julianne Donaldson!  Be sure to come back next week for a long awaited "Clean off the bookshelf" giveaway!

Happy reading this weekend!

S'more Summer Please?

 tháng 7 25, 2013     creative ideas, thoughts     No comments

{I can't possibly have a cookie without milk!}

When the forecast promises clouds and a possible thunderstorm, I usually know right away the day will be one dedicated to reading. (Especially when I'm finishing up a book as good as Life: An Exploded Diagram) But this past Tuesday was a different kind of rainy day. Instead of reading, a friend and I indulged in another hobby: baking.

This recipe for S'mores Cookies was super easy, and absolutely delicious! They are the perfect substitute for when the inclement weather prevents the toasting of marshmallows on an open fire.

I think the baking time for this sweet treat is very dependent on your own oven. We ended up baking ours for quite a bit longer than what was called for because after the instructed time, they were not as golden as we would have liked.

S’mores Cookies
Adapted from the blog Erica's Sweet Tooth

1-3/4 cups all purpose flour
1 cup graham cracker crumbs
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar
2 tsp vanilla extract
2 eggs
2 cups mini chocolate chips
1-1/2 cups mini marshmallows, or large ones cut up
2 Hershey bars, chopped

- Preheat oven to 375 degrees
- With an electric mixer, beat together the butter and sugars until light and fluffy
- Mix in eggs and vanilla to butter mixture until combined
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, graham crackers, salt, and baking soda
- Add the flour mixture to the butter mixture and mix well
- Stir in the chocolate chips
- Use 2 tablespoons or a medium-sized ice cream scoop to drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto cookie sheets
- Bake for 8 minutes and remove from oven. (Note: we baked them for up to 10 minutes to start) Push a few marshmallows and pieces of chocolate into each cookie and return to the oven to bake an additional 3-4 minutes.
- Cool cookies on a wire rack (or just hand them over steaming hot to your hungry friends)

Recipe yields about 3 dozen cookies

{Chopped Hershey bars and mini marshmallows}

{Finished product}

5 More Things

 tháng 7 19, 2013     places, writing     No comments

{6. Hydrangeas}

I thought I would blog only once on this vacation, but I couldn't help but share five more things that help make Cape Cod so special for me.

In the backyard here, there are several hydrangea bushes. The blue ones are my favorite, but there is a house around the corner with vibrant purple flowers, and a white one with yellow hues.

After getting ice cream this evening, we visited The Brewster Store. This general store is always filled buckets and baskets of odds and ends - wind up cars, refrigerator magnets, soaps, maps, and greeting cards. It's the perfect place to buy a souvenir or a kitchen item your rental house seemed to neglect.

{7. The Brewster General Store}

{8. Harbors}

{9. The Cape Cod Rail Trail}
Besides the beach, the CCRT is probably the one place on the Cape where I have spent the most time. The rides are always incredibly scenic, whether you are passing the cranberry bogs, the busy main streets, or Nickerson State Park. When riding, I often stare intently at my feet, watching them spin, spin - the pavement disappearing as quickly as it had appeared. I also watch the other people on the trail. The families - kids with lopsided helmets who are trying to keep pace with their parents. Runners - some with dogs panting at the heat. Walkers - strolling couples in big hats and new sneakers. It's in these observations where I pull out of my fatigue and discomfort and realize, these people I pass, I will see for a second or two, and then will never see again. Maybe they live on the next street over, or in Boston, or maybe even in Missouri, but they traveled to the Cape too.

They also find it special.

Thursday Three

 tháng 7 18, 2013     No comments

1)  Tonight is book club.  I LOVE book club, even when I don't get around to reading or finishing the book.  Well this time we read DIVERGENT by Veronica Roth.  One of those on my "to read" pile, that I just haven't gotten to yet.

WHY DID I WAIT!!!!!!!!????

I will be reviewing what I thought of the book and maybe some of what my book club talked about tomorrow.  But until then, I ask.  What do you read for book club?

2) While we're on the DIVERGENT subject.  Check out this quiz and tell us what you get!  I'm Divergent leaning towards Candor.  (I took several other quizzes and got Candor 95% of the time).

http://www.divergentfactions.com/divergent-faction-quiz.html

3) And while we're on the subject.  What do you generally think of YA books turned into movies?  Since Twilight and The Hunger Games did so well, many have been picked up.  But then Beautiful Creatures didn't do great in the US, so now studios are questioning doing more.  What are your thoughts?

I don't think the movie ever really is better than the book.  But I have been pleased with many, even with upsetting changes.  What books to movies have you loved?  Which have you hated?  Are you going to go watch DIVERGENT?

5 Things I Love About Cape Cod

 tháng 7 16, 2013     places, writing     No comments

{1. Lighthouses}
For as long as I can remember, my family has been coming to Cape Cod for our summer vacation. Over the many years of staying in homes anywhere from Harwich to Orleans, there are many things I have come to love. The following photographs are five of these things.

Usually the mornings here are foggy and a little chilly, but this week the temperatures are much warmer. This hotter weather has certainly not kept us indoors though! We kayaked yesterday to the Stage Harbor Lighthouse (shown above), and this morning rode our bikes to the Hot Chocolate Sparrow for lunch by way of the Cape Cod Rail Trail.

{2. Fishermen's Cedar Shake Sided Shacks  }

{3. Local Farm Stands}

{4. Cranberry Bogs}
Along those rides we passed numerous cranberry bogs, each very green and very picturesque. As we shifted into higher, and faster gears, we whirled past small ponds and thickly settled cottages, a rustic general store, and a busy Main Street. Twenty miles later and feeling hot and fatigued, we escaped to Harding's Beach, bringing with us some local fare. Of course, the best way to end the day was with ice cream!

The Future of Us

 tháng 7 13, 2013     book reviews, young adult fiction     No comments

The Future of Us
Jay Asher and Carolyn Mackler
356 pages

Josh and Emma have been best friends and neighbors for as long as they can remember. When Josh's family receives an American Online CD-ROM in the mail, his parents have him bring it over to Emma's so she can install it on her new computer. Upon installing the program, Josh and Emma are automatically logged onto Facebook. But there is only one issue...The year is 1996, and Facebook hasn't even been invented yet. The two friends find themselves looking at their profiles fifteen years in the future - their spouses, careers, homes - it's all there. These unexpected discoveries will force Josh and Emma to re-evaluate what they are doing right, and wrong, in the present.

The Future of Us was an incredibly creative story: the plot premise is certainly out-of-the-box and is relevant to today's teens. Emma, Josh and their friends were readable characters, and each of their quirky characteristics brought them to life just a little bit more.

Asher and Mackler had very similar writing styles - I could scarcely have told them apart, if it weren't for the alternating chapters of Josh, and then Emma's voice. Whenever two authors get together to write, there is always a concern that the styles will be uncomplimentary to each other. In this case, that was certainly not an issue.

The Future of Us is certainly a novel bound to make you laugh, smile, and maybe even reflect on the choices you make today, that could change your life tomorrow.

Thursday Three

 tháng 7 11, 2013     No comments

1) Monsters Univiersity.

Did you see it?  Did you like it?

I thought it was a great backstory to the characters we know and love.  But it was missing something that was magical about the first one.  That thing that Pixar has that makes you just fall in love with the characters and truly feel their heartbreaks.  My 5 yr old enjoyed it though so it will probably be something on the shelf in our home.  As far as Pixar movies go it's not the bottom of my list by any means, but it was just okay.

2) I know I have been slacking about blogging lately and I hope to change that.  1) cause when I actually do post, more of you read the blog.  Shocker.  2) because I have lots of books sitting on my shelves waiting to be given away!  But I need devoted readers to do that (hint, hint, if you comment I know you're not a lurker and are actually reading this).  And 3) because I am getting some awesome books to review and I am back in a "reading mood".  Pray it lasts people!

3) Remember that list of books I said I have to review?  Here's some hints as to what they might be:
Proper Romances
Janitorial Exploits
Gifted
Dauntless

New York City Experience: Day 3

 tháng 7 08, 2013     Blog Diary, City Safety, Day, New York City Experience, NYU, Personal     No comments

I got my ID! I am an official NYU student according to my new purple shiny card. The process to get that took a while. I took the subway to the NYU district, but I had a little complication on the subway. My parents were testing me to see if I would know what I had to do if I were to go on the subway by myself. I did pretty good until we started nearing the destination. I had been aware of each stop we made and was ready to go, but my dad started to talk to me and I got distracted. We almost missed getting off at the right stop. Lesson of the day: New York City isn't a place where you should get distracted.

I also learned a little something about the New York attitude, too. The guy was really rude and grouchy. At first it made me really defensive, but I started thinking . . . this is the kind of mentality I have to adapt to. This city is no joke. I went to Milos Greek restaurant that night with my parents, aunts, and grandmother. The majority of the conversation was about city safety and how I have to be aware of everything surrounding me. I would be lying if I said I'm a little nervous of living here, but I am sure I'll adapt.

That's all for now,

Camila (Nap. Snack. Read.)

Pivot Point

 tháng 7 08, 2013     book reviews, young adult fiction     No comments

Pivot Point
Kasie West
343 pages

As a Searcher, Addison Coleman has a unique power. When faced with a choice, she has the ability to look into the future and see both outcomes. The power is supposed to prevent disaster, but when Addie's parents tell her of their planned divorce, she will have to make her toughest decision yet. In alternating chapters, Addie will experience six weeks living with her mother, and six with her father. Both futures promise both love and loss, and for Addie it will come down to which fate she is willing to live through, and who she can't live without.

A cross between Paranormal and reality, West has created the most unique novel I have read in a long time. With strong characters, and engaging plot, it was undoubtedly an understandable read. The very beginning was a little confusing, as the reader must adjust to the fictional idea of humans having mind powers must stronger than our own. But, by the end, I found myself re-reading the entire last chapter, not out of confusion, but because "I can't believe that just happened."

Pivot Point is extremely suspenseful, romantic and surprising - an outstanding debut.

I absolutely cannot wait for the sequel, Split Second to be published in February of 2014!

Pivot Point is the third book I have read this year for the 2013 YA Contemporary Challenge. All Young Adult books for this challenge must be published at some point this year in order to qualify. As of now, I have read 3 of my 10 book goal. (Just One Day, This Is What Happy Looks Like, Pivot Point)

New York City Experience: Day 2

 tháng 7 07, 2013     Blog Diary, Day, Family, Korean, New York City Experience, NYU, People, Personal     No comments

I am titling this post as “Day 2” because this technically was my second day in the city even though I have been in New York for three days. The reason being is that I spent the whole morning yesterday in a car driving up to somewhere in the wonderful state of New York. I visited family up there and had a good time, but I think I can count that day and today’s day as one. An exciting part of yesterday that I can proudly inform you all is that I shot my uncle’s really big shot gun. He used this catapult to launch small flying discs into the air as targets. It is way harder than it looks, but you will be surprised to hear that I successfully hit TWO targets! I lost compared to my family, but whatever even hitting one was an accomplishment.

I had to leave bright and early from the farm because orientation was today. NYU did require it mandatory to all precollege students so it was a must. I was really nervous that I wasn’t going to make it, but lucky that wasn’t the case. We drove past all the beautiful greens of New York. Definitely beautiful, but I don’t think I could live anywhere like that. I was excited when we started to see signs of the city. We passed through New Jersey and stopped to have a snack at this small local plaza that was Korean. We went in to what I took to be a Korean based grocery story and bakery. I’m starting to think anything we do the Koreans do better . . . the fruit was absolutely gorgeous. At the entrance there was a little stand where a worker had cut up samples of the fruit and put little toothpicks so that people could try. It was all the regular fruit I loved but Korean style. The kiwi was yellow the melons were white and all of it was fresh. I was tempted to buy the fruit and take it with me for the next half an hour ride back into the city. However, I decided against that when I discovered the authentic Korean pastries. My parents and I shared the most delicious cream filled pastries. It was a nice way to fill up our stomachs before heading back to the Big Apple.

Today was a big day because I had scheduled an orientation mandated to all the incoming precollege students. I had to say I was a little nervous at first because I knew that I would not know anyone there, but I’ve never been too shy to talk to new people. So it was with mostly excitement that I went with my parents in the afternoon to the Kimmel building. I was dropped off there and began to follow the signs and people to the fourth floor waiting area. It was literally not six minutes into arriving that a fellow student began to talk to me. A friendly girl from Jersey with enough energy and excitement to kill a horse began to excitedly speak to me about stairs, classes, and herself. It eased my nerves a little bit after speaking to her. Clearly there were other people like me that wanted to get to know others.

The first half hour was a power point presentation on the program and everything we could possibly need to know. The people in charge of the program including the program director spoke to us and gave us a warm welcome. I spoke to no one at this point was starting to feel a little awkward again until we started to go off into assigned floor groups. My group appointed to me was great, and I got the chance to speak with almost every single one of its members. One girl in particular seemed nice, a Latina like me except she said she came all the way from Puerto Rico! Hopefully I get to see more of them as the program continues on. First day of class starts in two day!!

Excitedly,

Camila (Nap. Snack. Read.)

New York City Experience: Day 1

 tháng 7 05, 2013     Blog Diary, Day, Food, New York City Experience, NYU, Personal     No comments

I have been given the blessed opportunity to explore one of the world’s most amazing cities . . . The Big Apple. I am currently sitting in my new home for the rest of the summer and writing not only for my readers, but also more as a documentation of my experience in New York City. I have decided that a chance like this to explore the city life on my own and become independent in the ways of the world should be remembered. With that in mind, I have decided to record my experiences and such here, on my blog, every day if possible.

The decision to come to New York this summer was planned earlier on in the year. During the school year I began too look for programs of any kind that I could participate in that would allow me to do something that I love, cultivate that, and also have an amazing cultural experience in the mean time. New York University quickly drew my eye, as well as its incredible precollege program. I have visited the city on numerous occasions, as my grandma and other family members have lived here many years, but the idea of spending more than just a few days studying in such a prestigious university would be absolutely incredible. I spent some time researching which studies it offered and have applied and been accepted into the Expository Writing Class and the Creative Writing Workshop. This past year has been really focused on my academic studies, as well as a business and marketing program competition called DECA that really wrung most of my energy this school year. I thought to really center all my energy this summer on my love of words and language before all the chaos of college applications arrive in the fall.

Today was the beginning of my journey, one that will hopefully take me to some unexpected places and exciting experiences. I traveled by plane with my parents. I am so grateful to them for the opportunity they have given me. They have come with me for the first leg of my journey to make sure I am settled in and help me learn the in’s and out’s of such a complex and modernly exotic landscape. They themselves have walked these streets and are familiar with everything—from the subway to the people to the hotdog stands. I feel comfortable with them here, but I know that my time with them is running low, and I have to learn as much as I can and adapt to whatever they can’t teach me. They leave in 10 days time, but will be returning every couple of weeks to check up on me. (Secretly, I know it’s because they’ll miss me too much.)

From the moment we left LaGuardia Airport, I have been soaking up details and places faster than I can process. Apparently, this entire place is one long strip of land. I’m trying to familiarize myself with the way the avenues and the streets work (i.e. the long streets and the smaller ones that cut across.) I arrived early on and had time to settle my things down at the apartment before going out to explore. Can I just say that I am one lucky girl? The apartment is beautiful. My very gracious cousin has lent me her home for the next 2 months, and I am so grateful to her. It is absolutely incredible, and I can’t believe it’s all mine for the next 6 weeks! I spent the first few hours exploring the surroundings. Everything I need is basically just a few blocks away. Coming from the suburbs, I am not use to such close distances for everything. It’s nice to think that for whatever food craving, whatever need I have, I can just walk down the street or catch a subway to the nearest accommodating store. The cutest bakeries and shops are within walking distance. I had a late brunch with my parents at the most delicious organic French café called Le Pain Quotidien. Absolutely amazing quality food can be found there. I had the most delicious mixed berry tart that I practically had to battle for with my mother. We are both suckers for fruit tarts. I guarantee that will not be my last visit there, that’s for sure. We freshened up at the apartment and continued on with mapping out my route to get to NYU.

The university consists of multiple buildings in a huge area that takes a big chunk out of downtown. I geeked out a little when we passed the NYU Bookstore. Like the typical student who goes crazy over NYU branded merchandise, I became super excited over all the purple products. That place is a sucking vortex for any overly anxious new student of any kind. I might have gone a little overboard, but there was no way I was going to leave without an NYU cap, NYU t-shirt, and NYU hoodie. No. Way. In. Hell. My parents indulged me in this and my dad even got his own cap, so it wasn’t just me!

We spent the remainder of the day to check out where all the buildings I would have to go to are located and such. It was too late in the day to go get my id, but Monday I will have mine and become an official NYU student! Everything nearby there is so urban-like. Typical college environment with brewed coffee shops on every street and brick buildings. Walked down 3rdavenue for a long while, and based on what I have observed today I have come to the conclusion that I could spend a decade in the City and I will never be able to eat at all the amazing places that are here. I can’t even put to words the absolutely mouthwatering and amazing dinner I had. Momofuku is a noodle bar in downtown that serves the most amazing—you guessed it—noodles I have ever had so far. Personally, my favorite plate was this delicious pork bun that I had to order twice because there was just no way I could leave without second helpings. If you are ever by the city, look it up. Absolutely incredible. My tummy was satisfied, my feet are currently sore, and I count this as a successful first day.

I have written a lot, and this is only just the beginning. Most likely there will be days were I do not have much to say, and other where I wont be able to stop. I look forward to many days, all different in their experiences, and I hope you will keep up with them, too.

New York City enthusiast,

Camila (Nap. Snack. Read.)

Book Signing and Review -- Natalie Whipple's TRANSPARENT

 tháng 7 05, 2013     No comments

Okay, so this was forever ago, and I've been a horrible blogger, but I wanted to post because Natalie is made of awesome and her launch was so much fun!

Here's some of the snippets from her launch.  As usual remember I write these down as close to actual quotes as possible, but sometimes they get a little off.

  • Dreams, i can see them but I didn't know how to achieve them (talking about writing)
  • It's like stars.  When they're far away they're nice to look at and you're not sure what they're like up close, and that can be nice.
  • I went to college -- go for your dreams but have a back up plan was my mantra

  • Finished college and all I wanted to do was write, so I found myself at home with my baby and decided to start writing
  • I didn't know how to catch my dream.  I thought it might just fall out of the sky and into my lap. They don't do that.  You have to go out and get them.
  • Slowly I was ablet to catch this star thing and start bringing it down to me, but it was a lot of work.
  • This book was difficult (talking about TRANSPARENT) my agent said it all had to be re-written, so 1 chapter at a time I wrote it and sent it to my writer's group thinking they'd hate it, but they didn't.  I was reeling that star in slowly.
  • When I finished edits it sold to a publisher in 6 weeks, and that's when the dream got really real.  The star, the dream, got so real and so close.
  • It's (talking about the dream) not just a pretty sparkly thing in the sky.  It's a huge burning ball of gas that could kill me, but I can't take it back because at that point gravity took over.
  • But I'm really glad I went for my dreams even though it's been pretty much the hardest thing in my life.  Don't let that stop you!
Isn't she awesome!  Now is her book awesome?  Read on!

Placement in the Pile:  Reaching New Heights

Summary:
Plenty of teenagers feel invisible. Fiona McClean actually is.

An invisible girl is a priceless weapon. Fiona’s own father has been forcing her to do his dirty work for years—everything from spying on people to stealing cars to breaking into bank vaults.

After sixteen years, Fiona’s had enough. She and her mother flee to a small town, and for the first time in her life, Fiona feels like a normal life is within reach. But Fiona’s father isn’t giving up that easily.

Of course, he should know better than anyone: never underestimate an invisible girl.

Review:
Think x-men meets mobsters in a dystopian world.  Yeah, it's cool.

Natalie Whipple does a great job drawing you in instantly.  Fiona is a believable, likeable character.  A teenage girl with all the normal insecurities we can all relate to, even though she's invisible.  In fact her literal invisibility is what gives her the biggest connection to a real life teenager.  Don't we all feel invisible sometimes?

The pacing of the book was constant and I loved every minute.

If you're in the mood for a good summer read this one is for you!  I am very excited to see what else we get from Natalie!  She's one to watch!
