Fugitive Apprehension Agent Stephanie Plum has a big problem on her hands: Seven-year-old Annie Soder and her mother, Evelyn, have disappeared.

Evelyn's estranged husband, Steven, a shady owner of a seedy bar, is not at all happy. During the divorce proceedings, he and Evelyn signed a child custody bond, and Steven is demanding the money guaranteed by the bond to find Annie. The money was secured by a mortgage on Evelyn's grandmother's house, and the True Blue Bonds Bail Agency wants to take possession of the house.

Finding a kidnapped child is not an assignment for a bounty hunter. But Evelyn's grandmother lives next door to Stephanie's parents, and Stephanie's mother and grandmother are not about to see their neighbor lose her house because of abduction.

Even though Stephanie's plate is full with miscreants who missed their court dates, including old nemesis and violent drunk Andy Bender and an elusive little old lady accused of grand theft auto, she can't disappoint Grandma Mazur! So she follows the trail left by Annie and Evelyn-- and finds a lot more than she bargained for. Steven is somehow linked with a very scary Eddie Abruzzi. Trenton cop and on-again, off-again fiance Joe Morelli and Stephanie's mentor and tormentor, Ranger, warn Stephanie about Abruzzi, but it's Abruzzi's eyes and mannerisms that frighten Stephanie the most. Stephanie needs Ranger's savvy and expertise, and she's willing to accept his help to find Annie even though it might mean becoming too involved with Ranger.

Stephanie, Ranger, Lula (who's not going to miss riding with Ranger), and Evelyn's lawyer/laundromat manager set out to find Annie. The search turns out to be a race among Stephanie's posse, the True Blue Bonds' agent, a Rangerette known as Jeanne Ellen Burrows, and the Abruzzi crew. Not to mention the fact that there's a killer rabbit on the loose!

Strap on your helmet and get ready for the ride of your life. Hard Eight. The world of Plum has never been wilder.

BOOK REVIEW :

8 books down and I am very comfy with what to expect in Stephanie’s series of shenanigans, silly moments, Ranger ( let’s take a moment to breathe)…Joe moments, ( what are these two doing?)  and throw in some gruesome moments.

“There was a detail we’re not releasing to the press,” Morelli said.

“A gruesome detail?”

“Yeah.”

Oh it was gruesome.

Pretty much a check list of moments and you have another Steph P installment.

Not complaining as I read them for their poolside ease… except I don’t have a pool.

Steph’s being a bit more detective, than Bounty Hunter in this installment.

But fear not! Cars are going KABOOM!

Ranger is ‘grinning’ that dirty grin.

He tucked my hair behind my ear, his fingertips brushing feather light across my temple, his thumb at the line of my jaw. “I have my own team.”

“Tell me about Jeanne Ellen.”

Ranger smiled. “The information would have a price.”

“And the price would be what?”

The smile widened. “Try not to get too wet today,” he said. And he was gone.

Ranger is being all mysterious and bringing the sexual tension by the bucket load. Why-oh-why do you do this to me Janet? It’s like a scratch that is hard to reach and itch…but you find a way to itch it and ooooh does it feel good when you can get into that place.

“Babe,” Ranger said, “it’s not the end of the world to sleep with me.”

Baaazing!!!

Ranger was a cat. Quiet. Every muscle relaxed on command. Probably did yoga. Might not be human.

Joe is popping in and out. To ship or not to ship? That is the Q.

“This is what I think. I think there’s you and me, and sometimes we’re together. But there’s no us.”

“That feels a little lonely,” I said.

“Don’t make this more difficult than it already is,” Morelli said.

There is a sidekick. Always a sidekick. Often a quirky/annoying little man, funnily enough.

There is the hint of Ranger buddies...it's like teasing me. A little Hector, a little Tank...

There is somebody Steph went to school with…bahahaa. I actually wait for that moment.

The door opened, and Carol Nadich looked out at me.

“Stephanie!” she said. “How the hell are you?”

I went to school with Carol.

Bingo! I really could start marking squares off.

Steph still hasn’t grown as a character…she’s bumbling…thumbling…being stalked…kissed…needing TastyKakes.

Rinse and repeat.

Lula has her limelight. Love me some Lula. The best lines of dialogue..next to Ranger.

Vinnie dons his BH gear ( Bounty Hunter) and gives it another whirl.

FTA’s elude Stephanie no matter their age. This time round I did find myself rolling my eyes a little and wanting to take a hold of the reigns and get the job done.

Truly!

But then the book would have been shorter. Well, I could have spent some no-strings-attached time with Ranger.

Truly!

Let me throw down some fave quotes.

Ranger and I were oil and water. He was the Man of Mystery, and I was Ms Curiosity. We both knew this. Ranger tolerated it with mild amusement. I tolerated it with teeth clenched.

“I feel cheated,” Ranger said. “Usually when I’m with you a car explodes or a building burns down.”

“Sorry to disappoint.”

“Life is a bitch,” Ranger said. He reached out and grabbed me by my jacket sleeves, hauled me across the console, and kissed me.

“Do you want to try your luck with another car? We could raise the stakes. I could give you a Porsche.”

I smiled at Ranger. I can be mysterious too.

Stephanie Plum and the lads with a side order of sidekicks are strangely addictive.

Is it the best writing? No...but weirdly entertaining even if there is a lot of rinse and repeat, different day, different character going on. It's kinda an odd feeling every time I crack one of these open, there is an eagerness to slide back into the bumbling world Stephanie has made for herself...yet I kinda know what will more or less be going on...again except for the different character...different day.

I am plum suckered in.

Pun intended.

RATING: 3.75 STARS

In a world of magical visions and pyrokinesis, Mara just wants to have a normal life. But is that possible?

Mara has become used to the extraordinary. Roaming from place to place with Gideon Davorin’s Traveling Carnival, she longs for an ordinary life where no one has the ability to levitate or predict the future.

She gets her chance when the struggling sideshow sets up camp in the small town of Caudry and she meets a gorgeous local guy named Gabe. But before long, Mara realizes there’s a dark presence lurking in the town that’s threatening the lives of her friends. She has seven days to take control of a power she didn’t know she had in order to save everyone she cares about—and change the future forever.

BOOK REVIEW :

I am a HUGE fan of Amanda Hocking. I have a couple of her original covers for Trylle and My Blood Approves signed, which I covert. They are my precious.

I have read most of her works and reviewed them. Freeks, I enjoyed, but it might not be my favorite book from Amanda, and that is okay.

I am not sure if it is the beginning of a series because there was certainly room for more story line and answers to questions I have from Freeks.

I really liked her use of carnival characters who all possess a little something supernatural.

The romance I felt needed to connect with me more between Gabe and Mara. I would have liked him more in the story to solidify their less than two week romance. I needed something to hold onto there.

I really liked all the characters, but still feel like I have questions. I wondered about the tag on the cover telling me A Return To The World of The Trylle Series. I did not see any Trylle world in this book.

Unless, I have a memory lapse. I am curious about this.

I enjoyed this YA read, but at the same time I was looking for more. Trylle series and My Blood Approves series are both my two absolute fave series of hers. I was missing some of that writing style from Freeks.

I felt maybe the plot was a little too easy in Freeks, but maybe this will not be the case for another reader and I wanted more connection with Gabe and Mara in dialogue and being front and center. Gabe popped in and out and we moved around the life of the carnival more. I felt sometimes we moved away in the story from where we probably should have stayed for a bit longer, but of course it is not my story to tell.

I will always pick up an Amanda Hocking read regardless.

If you are an Amanda fan, try this one on for size and see what you think. I am a blogger who reads a mountain of books and I am also getting older, so this may also be a reason for my lower rating. I do enjoy a good YA read as much as an adult read, but sometimes I might be looking for a deeper connection with characters compared to a teenaged reader.

Amanda's Mini Q & A

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

Most of my free time is spent taking care of my pets (I currently have two dogs, three cats, and a hamster, so that takes up a lot of my time). I also watch a lot of bad movies, read a lot of good books, and play video games with my husband and stepson.

How many jobs have you had before you realised you were destined to become a writer?

I always knew that I wanted to be a writer, since I was about two or three years older, and I learned that making up stories could be a profession. But before I was actually able to pay the bills with my writing, I think I had six other jobs. Most of them involved either dishwashing or assisting people with disabilities.

Favourite genre to read?

My current favorite genres are probably horror (either YA or adult), and true crime.

EXCERPT - A LITTLE FAITH
RETRO POV

Faith is looking a little pale and trying not to show how shocked she is by the news about Text.

I hear a noise from the pool house. I look over and Text is standing there with a towel wrapped around his waist and a horrified look on his face. Fuck. He has been listening to my whole conversation with Faith. He is staring at me like I have broken a sacred vow of silence about the island.

I scrub my hand over my face before getting up from the daybed. I walk over to Text, whose hands are fisted at his sides.

I get close enough to try to talk quietly to him and the bastard decks me hard with a pretty good right hook.

I go down like a wimp. Faith screams out to Text to stop while I’m in lala land, rolling around on the ground.

“Fuck, dude. That hurt.” I’m trying to see past the pain. “That was an awesome right hook, but shit, I have a date with Birdie Evans tomorrow night. I was trying to look as pretty as possible. You just fucked that up.” I feel my cheek bone. It’s going to be bruised and angry tomorrow.

I look back up at Text who is now looking more horrified at what he just did to me. “Spit it out, dude. Tell me what that was all about?”

As Text comes back to himself, he’s got this lost puppy dog look on his face. He knows he’s fucked up.

He puts his hands out, helping me up. I let him. I know this shit is hard for him to hear.

“Shit, dude! You didn’t have to deck me. I’m all ears if there’s something on your mind you wanna discuss.” I pat him on the back.

Text is looking around, like he’s trying to find that Goddamn phone of his so he can start typing away.

“No phone, buddy? Well, that makes two of us. Look, I get this shit is hard for you to hear. I didn’t lie. You were a Goddamn hero. Own it, and stop fucking my face up. I can see you are having a full blown conversation with yourself in your head. I’m a person, too. I’ll let you off this time, but the next time you go to deck me, it’s game on. I’ll whoop your ass. Don’t say I haven’t warned you. This shit has got to stop.”

Text hangs his head. The fight has left the building. I know he feels bad. He could rant and rave and call me all the swear words he can think up, as long as he talked to me.

“You’re not playing fair, buddy.” I tap his head. “I don’t know what is going on in that head of yours. I want to help. We all want to help.”

Shit, now he’s got me feeling sorry for him. I know he doesn’t want me to do that.

“No hard feelings. But you owe me a verbal explanation one of these days for that outburst.”

Text is shifting back and forwards uncomfortably. My face hurts. We will both get over it.

Faith is approaching Text carefully.

Bear has come over to investigate.

“Bit late, buddy.” I scratch him behind the ears.

“If you will excuse me, Faith, I have to go and get ready for dinner with Phoenix. I have to explain to her about Birdie.”

I look over at Text. “Buddy, I’ll talk to you later. Just try not to hit anything other than the gym.”

RATING: 4.5 CRAZY SHENANIGAN STARS!

BLOWN UP

All New Jersey bounty hunter Stephanie Plum has to do is bring in semi-retired bail jumper Eddie DeChooch. For an old man he's still got a knack for slipping out of sight--and raising hell. How else can Stephanie explain the bullet-riddled corpse in Eddie's garden? Who else would have a clue as to why two of Stephanie's friends suddenly vanished? For answers Stephanie has the devil to pay: her mentor, Ranger. The deal? He'll give Stephanie all the help she needs--if she gives him everything he wants...

MESSED UP

As if things weren't complicated enough, Stephanie's just discovered her Grandma Mazur's own unmentionable alliance with Eddie. Add a series of unnerving break-ins, not to mention the bombshell revelation leveled by Stephanie's estranged sister, and Stephanie's ready for some good news. Unfortunately, a marriage proposal from Joe Morelli, the love of her life, isn't quite cutting it. And now--murder, a randy paramour, a wily mobster, death threats, extortion, and a triple kidnapping aside--Stephanie's really got the urge to run for her life...

BOOK REVIEW:

Book seven!!!

The recipe is still very much a check list in the Stephanie Plum series, even seven books in. Does it matter I can virtually predict the check list to a T what each book will contain in storyline?

Nahhh.

Janet is my light-and-easy-reading-go-to-author. As I've always said, they are poolside reads with a side order of villainous activity.

Mooner and Dougie pop up again and then they go MIA.

Bob still has a healthy appetite.

Steph used to go to school with another freshly mentioned character. CHECK!

Ranger is putting the kissy face moves on Steph. Check!

Morelli and Steph…I SMH. I’m very confused with what is classified as cheating, where Ranger is involved. It's a no brainer Joe is gonna be THE ONE, but man all the mixed signals.

*Scratches head*

“You find DeChooch. If you need help bringing him in you call me. If I succeed in the capture, you spend the night with me.”

My heart stopped beating. Ranger and I had been playing this game for a while now, but it had never been articulated in quite this way.

“I’m sort of engaged to Morelli,” I said.

Ranger smiled.

Shit.

“Okay, here’s the truth. I’d really like to sleep with you, but I have this stupid wedding gown…”

Ranger’s lips swept along my jawline to my ear. “I could make you forget about the gown.”

STEPH!

I want to feel the connection with Morelli, but we never really get much to hold onto with him and Steph. It’s quite odd how Janet words these two together. It's more f*&k buddies.

I feel more of a Stephanie/Ranger connection. Eh, I got no clue how I am supposed to feel about the three of them and whatever is going on in each book. It’s simply not clear to me.

Dudes, I’m being honest.

Grandma is still up for a good pre-funeral viewing. CHECK!

What I did love was getting some cousin Vincent showing us his Bounty Hunter skills, even if it was only a small part. I like getting something fresh thrown into this series at book # 7.

We do get Valerie popping up, and she has her own Steph-ways about her.

Ranger is wearing black. CHECK!

He was wearing black dress slacks, a long-sleeved light-weight black sweater pushed up on his forearms, and expensive black loafers. His hair was cut very short. ( Giddy up! ) I was used to seeing him in SWAT dress with long hair, and I hadn’t immediately recognized him.

Aannd then we get…

It was a Harley-Davidson FXDL Dyna Low Rider. It was black with custom green flames and custom pipes. Lula was right. It wasn’t a dumb-ass bike. It was a wet dream.

“You know how to drive one of these?” Lula asked.

I smiled at her. “Oh yeah,” I said. “Oh yeah.”

I did chuckle at this bit because Steph can’t keep a car intact, apart from the Buick, but all of a sudden she is a biker.

Oh the beauty of being the writer.

For the era… starting back in late 90’s, this series has stood the test of time because apparently we love a good, silly, shenanigan filled read where Steph really doesn't have any character growth. She is still the bumbling Bounty Hunter who makes it up along the way.

Now for that ending.

(#)@)@(*#)@(!%@$^!%@$^!!!

I have to pick up Hard Eight, because of that damn ending, even if it is just to read the first few pages until I can read more.

Good thing I picked up a bunch of these in order from the OP shop and it was half price Friday.

Who knew?

BOOK REVIEW - ARCHANGEL'S SHADOWS by NALINI SINGH - GUILD HUNTER # 7 - PARANORMAL ROMANCE - GOLLANCZ

tháng 2 05, 2017     4.5 STARS, Archangel's Shadows, Book Reviews 2017, Gollancz, Guild Hunter Series, Hachette, Library Loan, Nalini Singh, Paranormal Romance     No comments

By: Nalini Singh
Published By: Gollancz
Released : Available Now
Details: Paperback from library, 384 Pages

RATING: 4.5 JANVIER, ILLIUM, DMITRI AND NAASIR STARS!!

Blurb: Goodreads

In the wake of a brutal war, the archangel Raphael and his hunter consort, Elena, are dealing with the treacherously shifting tides of archangelic politics and the people of a battered but not broken city. The last thing their city needs is more death, especially not a death that bears the eerie signature of an insane enemy archangel who cannot - should not - be walking the streets. This hunt must be undertaken with stealth and without alerting their people. It must be handled by those who can become shadows themselves...

Ash is a gifted tracker and a woman cursed with the ability to sense the secrets of anyone she touches. But there's one man she knows all too well without a single instant of skin contact: Janvier, the dangerously sexy Cajun vampire who has fascinated and infuriated her for years. Now, as they track down a merciless killer, their cat-and-mouse game of flirtation and provocation has turned into a profound one of the heart. And this time, it is Ash's secret, dark and terrible, that threatens to destroy them both.

Nalini Singh, the NEW YORK TIMES bestselling 'alpha author of paranormal romance' (BOOKLIST), returns to her stunning world, as it braces itself for destruction.

BOOK REVIEW:

I really do adore the Guild Hunter series, but this book took me a lot longer to read than any of Nalini’s books.

I can’t really put my finger on why. I still enjoyed it, but I read several books in between as I was reading, which isn’t something I normally do at all.

Janvier and Ashwini are great characters. I realized I had missed out on their initial meet-and-greet in Angels' Pawn, novella. Maybe that threw me a little. I would advise reading about their meet and greet first. I really enjoyed these two characters, but something was missing for me.

Elena and Raphael are always gorgeous to read, along with Illium, but this time I got so much enjoyment out of reading Naasir.

Honestly in this book I could have read a lot more of him, he really stole the limelight and I loved his banter with Ashwini and his getting to know Elena more.

Even though he’d been riding on top of the car—the maniac—the heavy silver silk of his hair had fallen back around his face in straight strands cut with a choppiness that suited him, and he looked far more civilized than she’d expected. He’d dressed in black pants and a black shirt, with an ankle-length black coat, the stark shade throwing his hair and eyes into sharp focus.

Naasir conveniently let us know how much he wants to find a mate for life and I am so looking forward to that book.

I don’t look ahead, so I don’t know yet if a book has been written or I might be tempted to throw myself at it.

The writing as always is top notch in descriptive and visually seeing scenes through Nalini’s words.

Another great installment, but probably one that was a little slower for me personally, to completely become immersed into the pages.
