RATING: 4 SHENANIGAN STARS!

Blurb: Goodreads

Stephanie Plum, Trenton, New Jersey's favorite pistol-packing, condom-carrying bounty hunter, is back - and on the trail of a revenge-seeking waitress who's skipped bail. With the help of 73-year-old Grandma Mazur, ex-hooker Lula, a transvestite musician named Sally Sweet, and the all-too-hospitable, all-too-sexy Joe Morelli, Stephanie might just catch her woman. Then again, with more mishaps than there are exits on the Jersey Turnpike - including murders, firebombs, and Stephanie's arch-rival bounty hunter chasing after the same fugitive - Stephanie better watch her back big-time if she wants to live to crack this case.

BOOK REVIEW:

Shenanigans abound.

Morelli vs Plum slides into some home runs.

Ranger just tickles my lady boner.

Sally Sweet is the new addition…rocker-transvestite.

Lula is… H.I.L.A.R.I.O.U.S.

Put Lula, Grandma Mazur, Sally and Steph on a short road trip to Atlanta and shit will go sideways…inevitable.

Throw in a biaatch from the past and you have another Stephanie Plum installment…well, also a few missing body parts and a murder and cars going KABOOM.

Janet has a way with describing her characters.

If people were cars, Lula would be a big, black ’53 Packard with a high-gloss chrome grill, oversized headlights, and a growl like a junkyard dog. Lots of muscle. Never fit in a compact place.

Ranger was waiting under the canopy. He was dressed in a black T-shirt and black assault pants tucked into black boots. He had a body like Schwarzenegger, dark hair slicked back off his face and a two-hundred-watt smile. He was drop-dead sexy, he was as sane as Batman, and he was a primo bounty hunter.

He was dressed in tight black leather pants held together at the sides with leather lacing that left a strip of pale white flesh from ankle to waist, and a black leather vest that molded around cone-shaped , eat-your-heart-out-Madonna breasts. He was close to seven feet tall in his black platform pumps. He had a large hook nose, red roses tattooed on his biceps and – thank you, Lord – he didn’t had a tongue stud. He was wearing a blond Farrah Fawcett wig, fake eyelashes and glossy maroon lipstick. His nails had been painted to match his lips.

Then put Lula and Sally together and the discussions on female attire and cosmetics.

He was wearing leather sandals, cut-offs that were so short he had a cheek showing, a sleeveless T-shirt top and a two-day beard.

“Not sure you totally got the hang of this woman stuff,” Lula said. “Think maybe you’d do better shaving your ass than worrying about lip gloss.”

“Jesus,” Sally said, “who do you think I am, Thunder the Wonder Horse? My gun wouldn’t fit in my purse.”

“You need to get a smaller gun,” Lula said. “Ruins your lines with that big Glock in your drawers.”

And because Debbie Reynolds passed away yesterday, and after seeing her as Grandma Mazur in the One For The Money movie, which I watched again yesterday, here is a quote.

“Pot roast,” Lula said. “Boy, I like pot roast.” She pulled a chair up and shook out her napkin.

“I always wanted to eat with a Negro,” Grandma said.

“Yeah, well, I always wanted to eat with a boney-assed old white woman,” Lula said. “So I guess this works out good.”

Grandma and Lula did some complicated handshake thing.

“Bitchin’,” Grandma said.

Another fun beach read that has me coming back for more.

R.I.P Debbie and Carrie.

BLOOD VOW by J.R. WARD - BLACK DAGGER LEGACY # 2 - PIATKUS - ADULT PARANORMAL ROMANCE

By: J.R. Ward

Published By: Piatkus, Hachette
Released : Available Now
Details: Paperback from publisher for honest review, 459 Pages ( Thank You! )

RATING: 5 AXE, RHAGE...nawww LASSITER STARS!

A tough vampire warrior in training and a quick-witted aristocrat develop an irresistible attraction and work together to uncover a mystery. The second in a new spin-off paranormal romance series set in the world of the #1 New York Times bestselling Black Dagger Brotherhood.

Trainees at the Black Dagger Brotherhood' training centre continue to prepare for the fight against the Lessening Society, but fighting is the last thing on Axe's mind. Still plagued with the guilt of his father's death, the brooding loner finds himself battling an unlikely attraction to Peyton's bright, aristocratic cousin, Elise.

Elise feels it too - and when the two are thrown together in unusual circumstances Elise must decide whether she can trust Axe to help her uncover the mystery surrounding her sister's death.

Meanwhile, Mary and Rhage are in the process of adopting Bitty, a young pretrans orphan, until the appearance of a young male claiming to be Bitty's blooded uncle threatens to tear the new family apart.

BOOK REVIEW :

I literally get giddy when I receive a BDB book from the publisher and I have the oh-so-hard task of squirreling myself away to read it.

I worship every word J.R. Ward writes about these Vampire men, these sexy ass lovers who give all for their shellan.

This is the spinoff series, but at the same time I felt oh so comfortable like I was still in the original BDB series.

These books are thick and I virtually start having BDB-withdrawal when I get closer to the end, because I want them to keep going.

That’s how much I love the BDB world.

Rhage and Mary and Bitty share part of this book along with Elise and Axe and the trainees.

I do love these new characters sliding into the BDB world. Peyton and Novo are becoming more and more faves of mine.

Axe is rawrrrr and I was purring reading his character...he almost appears like he is ready to step into those big shitkickers.

V and the other lads make appearances which is always humma humma and no less as BABU’s.

If we could all be so lucky.

And then there is Lassiter.

Oh…my…God…is he the funny bone in the latter part of The Warden’s BDB series of books. He really is one of the funniest sub characters brought into a long standing series.

He is THE BEST!

I really do want more of him in each book  from now on.

You are gonna so adore him when he pops in and out of this book. He really will tickle your funny bone.

Sometimes I think the BDB lads can be a little hard on the guy.

Vishious put both hands up to his face and rubbed hard. Like in his mnd, he was throwing a beat-down in the angel’s direction, but he knew he couldn’t draw blood in front of the girl -- and the self-control required was killing him.

“You can stay home,” V muttered. “You really can totally f-in’ stay the f home, you f’ed-up mother-f’ing f-twit.”

Lassiter clasped his breastplate, and swooned like Julie Andrews. “Don’t you love it when he can’t swear? Warms the cockles—it’s like watching a drunk on roller skates try to play dodgeball in the dark—"

I do love the banter between the BDB lads and Lassiter, but sometimes I wonder at why they can appear to dislike him so much and be a little mean/hard on him. He’s just hilarious and a bit of a big kid. Totally harmless, but underneath…there is a more serious side to Lassiter you get a little peek at on occasion and there is a lotta heart inside that angel.

I often wonder if the angel is lonely. * looks wistful*

“Hey,” Lassiter said as he opened the way through the vestibule, “will anyone slap a puck around with me to pass the time?”

“No,” everybody including Bitty, shot back.

“But I will slap the f-in’ crap out of something else,” V said under his breath.

“I love it when you talk dirty to me. Gimme a hug. C’mon, you know you wanna…”

All in all, this was another ripper of a read and I am so excited for The Chosen coming in April 2017.

Be still my heart...it's FINALLY Layla and Xcor.

*dances like Elaine from Seinfeld*

BOOK REVIEW - TEN THOUSAND SKIES ABOVE YOU by CLAUDIA GRAY - FIREBIRD # 2 - HARPER TEEN - YA SCI-FI ROMANCE

tháng 12 27, 2016     4.5 STARS, Book Reviews 2016, Claudia Gray, Firebird Series, Harper Teen, Romance, Sci-Fi, Ten Thousand Skies Above You, YA Genre     No comments

By: Claudia Gray
Published By: Harper Teen
Released: Available Now
Details: Paperback from library, 426 Pages

RATING: 4.5 PAULS, THEOS & CONLEYS

Ever since she used the Firebird, her parents' invention, to cross into alternate dimensions, Marguerite has caught the attention of enemies who will do anything to force her into helping them dominate the multiverse—even hurting the people she loves. She resists until her boyfriend, Paul, is attacked and his consciousness scattered across multiple dimensions.

Marguerite has no choice but to search for each splinter of Paul’s soul. The hunt sends her racing through a war-torn San Francisco, the criminal underworld of New York City, and a glittering Paris where another Marguerite hides a shocking secret. Each world brings Marguerite one step closer to rescuing Paul. But with each trial she faces, she begins to question the destiny she thought they shared.

The second book in the Firebird trilogy, Ten Thousand Skies Above You features Claudia Gray’s lush, romantic language and smart, exciting action, and will have readers clamoring for the next book.

BOOK REVIEW:

Well, I will say, I LURVED this installment and I totally understood all the Pauls and Theos so much clearer.

I really do love what Claudia did with this book. She really shows the reader in a clever way her vision with the parallel dimensions, being the multiverses.

I liked having Marguerite help the reader with how she saw all the Pauls and Theos and even her own mums and dads and Josies.

Sending us with Marguerite to new and maybe an already visited multiverse *coughRussia*, brought familiarity.

Claudia has done a wonderful job making me love Theo more and I find myself questioning my allegiance to Paul.

WT?

Theo and Paul are so different in their behaviors. Sure they both love Marguerite and she them in separate ways. I think Claudia plays with the reader a little in that respect.

I know it is Paul all the way for Marguerite, because she does reason each of her multiverse Marguerite-emotions out for us.

We learn things about Paul in the erm…real? Universe, because of another multiverse. Which kinda makes me ask the Q, which IS the real VERSE, because technically everybody in each multiverse thinks theirs is.

Oh, I dig too deeply there.

Well done Claudia. I loved the chase, the twists, the Conleys.

The ending.

Whahhh.

Shit just got real.

BOOK REVIEW - THREE TO GET DEADLY by JANET EVANOVICH - STEPHANIE PLUM # 3 - MYSTERY - CONTEMPORARY CRIME - PENGUIN

tháng 12 14, 2016     5 STARS, Book Reviews 2016, Contemporary Crime, Janet Evanovich, Mystery, St. Martin's Griffin, Stephanie Plum Series, Three To Get Deadly     No comments

By: Janet Evanovich
Published By: St. Martin's Griffin
Released: Available Now
Details: Paperback from library, 350 Pages

RATING: 5 HILAROUS LULA STARS

Blurb: Goodreads

A “saintly” old candy store owner is on the lam - and bounty hunter extraordinaire Stephanie Plum is on the case. As the body count rises, Stephanie finds herself dealing with dead drug dealers and slippery fugitives on the chase of her life. And with the help of eccentric friends and family, Steph must see to it that this case doesn't end up being her last....

BOOK REVIEW:

To date this is the BEST Steph Plum book I have read.

Why?

Lula and Stephanie together and their banter. Lula is freakin’ hilarious. She really shined in this book and I would go as far as to say, she stole a lot of the limelight.

I have noted all the pages in my review notebook and written, ‘Lula’ as the keyword and there's a lot of them. I shall share some Lula moments, but firstly an update on Lula’s description.

Lula was a former hooker turned file clerk. She’d just recently embarked on a makeover program that included dyeing her hair blond and then straightening it and recurling it into ringlets. The transformation had her looking like a 230-pound black kick-ass Shirley Temple.

Lula as a sidekick is magic.

“I’ll stake it out good,” Lula said. “I won’t miss a thing.”

I turned the key in the ignition and pulled away from the curb. “What will you do if you see Mo?”

“I’ll snatch the little fucker up by the gonads and squash him into the trunk of my car.”

“No! You’re not authorized to apprehend…”

The chemistry between Stephanie and Lula had me in fits of laughter all the way through this book. She is such a gem of a character.

“Remember,” I said to Lula, “I do the talking. And most of all, don’t shoot him.”

“Not unless he starts something.”

“He isn’t going to start something, and even if he does there will be no shooting!”

“Hunh,” Lula said. “No pocketbooks, no perfume, no shooting. You got an awful lot of rules, you now that?”

The way Lula approaches looking for a FTA with Stephanie is as funny as hell, which always evolved into so much more with other characters coming into play as they both get deeper into an investigation.

I approached the closed bathroom door with my pepper spray in hand. I flipped the door open and jumped back. The door crashed against the wall and Lula dove behind the couch.

I looked into the empty bathroom, and then looked over at Lula.

Lula picked herself up. “Just testing my reflexes,” Lula said. “Trying out new techniques.”

"Uh-huh.”

Joe and Steph have some awkward chemistry in this installment.

He stood and tugged at my hair. “Be careful driving home.”

He snagged a brown leather bomber jacket off a hook on the wall at the far end of the bar and left.

I stared after him, dumbstruck. He’d tugged my hair. First a chuck on the chin, and now a tug at my hair. This was a definite put-off. It was one thing for me to snub Morelli. It was an entirely different matter for him to snub me. This was not how the game was played.

Now let’s talk Ranger. He tickles my lady bone. He is such a gorgeous, Alpha character who is so good to Stephanie and playful.

“They’re setting an extra plate,” I told Ranger.

There was a moment of silence at the other end.

“You come from a long line of scary women,” Ranger finally said.

Water bubbled up from the boiling potatoes…

My mother stabbed at the potatoes. “The potatoes are done,” she said.

“I have to go,” I told Ranger. “The potatoes are done.”

“What’ll happen if I don’t show up?” Ranger wanted to know.

“Don’t ask.”

“Shit,” Ranger said.

“Boy,” I said when we were out on the street. “Mr. Charm.”

“In sweats, too,” he said. “You should see me work my magic in leather.”

"So why are you really here?" I asked Lula.
Lula's eyes never left Ranger. "I'm here 'cause he's the shit."
"The shit?"
"Yeah, you know...the shit. The king. The cool."
"Do we know anyone else who's the shit?"
"John Travolta. He's the shit, too."
We watched Ranger some, and I could see her point about Ranger being the shit.

Love Steph’s family who are always in the picture. Steph’s dad I am still trying to work out, but the women of the household are so real and warm.

He was staring at Ranger with the sort of dumbfounded confusion you’d expect of a man whose home had just been firebombed for no good reason.

Ranger was in his black mode today. Double gold studs in his ears, form-fitting long-sleeved black T pushed up to his elbows, black-banded diver’s watch at his wrist, black rapper slacks tucked into black combat boots, with enough gold chain around his neck to secure bail for murder one.

“Have some ham,” Grandma said to Ranger, passing him the plate. “Are you a Negro?” she asked.

Ranger didn’t blink an eye. “Cuban.”

The recipe for a Stephanie Plum read is shenanigans abound, mixed with some slow burning sexual tension along the way, FTA’s that need bounty huntering, sidekicks that add so much humor and some gorgeous Alpha men and a quirky family thrown in for good measure.

Oh...and always a bit of gorey description to add extra flavor.

I’m addicted.

I so could have seen this book as a movie. Lula was truly the star and that is okay because this is Stephanie’s long series and she knows how to keep us coming back for more.

Next up…Four To Score.

INESCAPABLE by AMY A. BARTOL - THE PREMONITION # 1 - YA PARANORMAL ROMANCE

tháng 12 13, 2016     4.5 STARS, Amy A. Bartol, Book Reviews 2016, Inescapable, Paranormal Romance, The Premonition Series, YA Genre     No comments

By: Amy A Bartol
Published By: Amy A Bartol
Released: Available Now
Details: Kindle purchase, 368 Pages

RATING: 4.5 REED & RUSSELL & ZEPHYR STARS!

Blurb: Goodreads

My name is Evie Claremont and this was to be the making of me–my freshman year of college. I’d been hoping that once I’d arrived on Crestwood’s campus, the nightmare that I’ve been having would go away. It hasn’t.

I may be an inexperienced seventeen-year-old, but I’m grounded…sane. I look for rational explanations to even the strangest circumstances. Since meeting sophomore Reed Wellington, however, nothing makes any sense. Whenever he’s near, I feel an attraction to him–a magnetic kind of force pulling me towards him. I know what you’re thinking…that sounds fairly awesome. Yeah, it would be…if he liked me, but Reed acts as if I’m the worst thing that has ever happened to Crestwood…or him. But get this, for some reason every time I turn around he’s there, barging into my life.

What is the secret that he’s keeping from me? I’m hoping that it’s anything but what I suspect: that he’s not exactly normal…and neither am I. So, maybe Crestwood won’t be the making of me, but it could be the breaking of me. I’ve been left to wonder if the dark future my dream is foretelling is…inescapable.

BOOK REVIEW:
I really dug this first installment in The Premonition series. The characters and storytelling was of the YA age bracket, but I thought it appealed very much to adults of various ages too.

Several times when reading Inescapable I couldn’t help but wonder if it was ever a Twilight fan fiction.

Maybe…maybe not, but I had really strong fan fiction moments while reading. I have read Sempre by J.M Darhower and I believe it was definitely Twilight fan fiction, but I gotta say I personally never saw it when reading Sempre at all. But, Inescapable I personally felt it was in there quite strongly, but eh, I could be wrong.

Not that it matters. I loved this book and am rather eager to read on.

Reed Wellington I really liked for many reasons. He’s just uber yummy book boyfriend material. Period.

His eyes narrow, “I wanted to destroy you,” he says, and a shiver goes through me, “and I wanted to take you in my arms and love you, and I wanted to tear you apart, and I wanted to crush anything that would harm you, all at the same time.”

“No one wants to be proven wrong more than I do,” Reed says tiredly. “Everything about you calls to me. Your skin begs me to touch it, and when I do it burns me like a drug and I want more. You are like a cut that never heals. I just keep bleeding,” Reed says while he disengages from my embrace.

I also liked Russell. It is so hard to not want him to be with Evie Claremont and on top of that they have a connection to start with.

When I thought I had some future things worked out, I wasn’t quite right and then I got a cool twist which I hadn’t factored in at all.

I love getting those.

I think this has everything for the YA reader and I am so looking forward to more.

Oh and that guy Zephyr…yeah…he’s pretty cool.

BOOK REVIEW - TWENTY-EIGHT AND A HALF WISHES by DENISE GROVER SWANK - ROSE GARDNER MYSTERY # 1 - COZY MYSTERY

tháng 12 08, 2016     3.5 STARS, Book Reviews 2016, Bramagioia Enterprises, Cozy Mystery, Denise Grover Swank, Rose Gardner Mystery Series, Twenty-Eight And A Half Wishes     No comments

By: Denise Grover Swank
Published By: Bramagioia Enterprises
Released: Available Now, FREE on AMAZON
Details: Kindle purchase couple years ago, 374 Pages

RATING: 3.5 ROSE & MUFFY STARS!

Blurb: Goodreads

For Rose Gardner, working at the DMV on a Friday afternoon is bad even before she sees a vision of herself dead. She’s had plenty of visions, usually boring ones like someone’s toilet’s overflowed, but she’s never seen one of herself before. When her overbearing momma winds up murdered on her sofa instead, two things are certain: There isn't enough hydrogen peroxide in the state of Arkansas to get that stain out, and Rose is the prime suspect.

Rose realizes she’s wasted twenty-four years of living and makes a list on the back of a Wal-Mart receipt: twenty-eight things she wants to accomplish before her vision comes true. She’s well on her way with the help of her next door neighbor Joe, who has no trouble teaching Rose the rules of drinking, but won’t help with number fifteen-- do more with a man. Joe’s new to town, but it doesn’t take a vision for Rose to realize he’s got plenty of secrets of his own.

Somebody thinks Rose has something they want and they’ll do anything to get it. Her house is broken into, someone else she knows is murdered, and suddenly, dying a virgin in the Fenton County jail isn’t her biggest worry after all.

BOOK REVIEW:

Hot on the tails of reading my first two Stephanie Plum books I decided to keep up the mystery solving and dust off Twenty-Eight and a Half Wishes which had been sitting patiently for too long on my Kindle.

As of today, with over 4,800 ratings on Amazon and over 20,640 ratings on Goodreads I felt it was time to see what Rose Gardner was all about.

I am finding I am very much enjoying these very clean ( in the sex department) sleuthing reads. They certainly get people reading and rating them.

Now I am gonna say, I found this first installment a little eye rolling in places and I had a bit of trouble working out what Rose was actually solving. It wasn’t that clear a line for a mystery with her name attached to the series title in this first installment. Others were solving things, but Rose was doing lots of different things.

Muffy was kinda hilarious. In Australia we had a TV show many moons ago called Skippy and how the kid talked to the kangaroo…well…hehehe. Muffy seemed a bit more clued in than Rose at times.

I did enjoy Rose's visions. I would probably react the same as she did and blurt out what I saw.

I think I need to not read a Stephanie Plum and a Rose Gardner close together as they both have Joe's in it. Note to self.

I can see many, many more books come after this one, all with thousands and thousands of ratings, so it is an ever popular series.

I like to call this one the Pilot read for me personally. Like you have in a TV series when they first start up.

I am giving this read a solid 3.5stars for many reasons. I found connecting with Joe a little difficult. I wanted to feel more for him. I liked him, but I wanted to like him more.

Rose was a little over the top ditzy at times. I get there is humor thrown in, but I like my female lead to be a bit smarter and not so blase about things that are quite serious. I felt like we changed directions several times and the plot was a little transparent when it should be a real mystery.

I can see from review ratings that I am quite within the area that a lot of readers rated and then of course thousands and thousands of four and five stars.

I think with this first installment for me, it was just, okay, but I will certainly be plowing my way through this whole series as I am rather addicted now to these fade to black ( in the sex department) mystery reads where the chick has this male sidekick who pops up when needed and shenanigans abound.

It is currently FREE on Amazon, so give it a go for yourself. You may well be a five or four star rater when you have finished.

I think this one would float about all over the place in ratings, depending on what you want from a good and humorous mystery read.

Onto, Twenty-Nine and a Half Reasons, next month.
